Branding Your Social Media Identity

The other day, I had a friend request on Facebook. I reluctantly accepted it, than assumed I would never hear from this entity again. Yes – entity. It was not a person… it was a thing. The only thing in the profile picture was the number 3 with the name revolution in blurry lines. I thought to myself – why? Sure, on business portals, it is good to use a brand or logo. But when you are connecting with people, you should really try to be a person. The new name of branding on social networks is to show that you are real and not just an entity. You will definitely get better responses. The number 3 that I am now connected to is very mysterious and I don’t know how to get to know this person better.

It is like talking to someone where you have a webcam and they don’t. Let’s not get into the psychology of feeling vulnerable, invisible and like you are in cyberspace alone. If you are a person on the Internet, then the best way to disclose who you are is to show that you are a person on the other side of the computer. It is okay to put up a picture. It is also okay to let others know some things about you – but please… not too much information. For businesses, this will let others know that you are legitimate, an expert in your field and that you are sincere in what you are doing. Any online business that is going to succeed knows that these three keys are what drives forward a presence in the information age.
